Late August Baja Rip – Punta Baja to Ensenada – Fire detour
Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009Hello Baja Junkie Brethren
Just had an epic couple days in Baja and wanted to share….
Big Daddy hauled Bill Z, Pup , Lobster and Troy Harper and myself about 7 hours down to El Rosario on a Thursday. We rolled through TJ and Rosarito with no stops but a beautiful sunny day filled with solid surf greeted us.
We jammed to Ensenada for some tacos at Las Brisas just south of the Ensenada race start line and then continued to the Baja Cactus and Momma’s for dinner. Momma wasn’t there but her daughter said Momma is soon to be 102 and going strong! Viva Momma!
We may of got into some drinks and maybe some tequila….Somehow Chris Dornsife received the nickname Pup. I laughed so hard I spit my drinks out. Suffice it to say he is brand new and needs to wear a choker and a leash for now.
Woke to an epic morning and got ready to ride. Originally this was going to be a 4 day recon trip but due to some drop outs and others needing to be home Thurs and Sun we ended up just having fun and doing nothing more than popping wheelies.
We rode out to Punta Baja and checked out the light tower and then proceeded to try and get on the long sand beach to the north of it approx 1 mile. Lobster and I are ready for some repels but today we opted not to lower the bikes on to this unknown beach but I could see one track on the beach from a local so I knew we could get off of it, depending on tidal constraints.

Pup is brand new and was pretty confused when I asked Lobster if he had the tow rope we use for this kind of buffoonery. We could see the locals also had a ladder but we opted for the road around and found ourselves on a cool beach with a solid but not huge arch rock that we shot pics of. Pup is the photog now so we’ll see how his post goes….Pup?

We found that it was a one way on and off beach, looks to be so even at lower low tides. We also checked out the sand dunes to the north of the El Rosario river mouth and found all dead ends to the north.
We then went for a later breakfast at Mommas! Yeeee
From here we ran a back canyon that I know, I’m sure many of you know it. Then we crossed the highway and made our way to the Pacific. There is some 1 track in here that I made before but we were cruising so we skipped them and just rode to what I think are some of the most epic ocean front bluffs in Baja. Many times they are covered with grass and they extend out into the water solidly, reminds me of standing on the bluff at Steamers Lane in Santa Cruz but no one for miles. This is one of my favorite spots in populated Baja and the finger sticking out into the water with all the arches and water splashing through is pretty amazing.

We then slabbed a bit North until we could get on the long beach south of San Quintin. You have to battle some rocks to get to the sand and the tide was high. Bill Z was leading and although he is one of out more conservative riders at 54 he went for the rocks and ended getting too low on the cobbles and then into the wet ones and then…wham
Bill happened to land on the one larger sized rock right into the high side of his right rib cage….he was hurting but not bad.
Through San Quintin and then out to the beach by the salt flats and up to the Pirate Bar for a little lunch. Bill was hurting but he didn’t want to trailer up…well I think he wanted to but didn’t want to be “that” guy.
Stopped to help a lady that crashed her mini bike near the Shipwreck. Sandals and shorts with no helmet and scuffed up a bit. Troy got her scooter going and we just shook our heads. Makes you realize how even a slow speed crash can be a bummer.
Single track into Colonet area and then we realized some of the fences were open that have been closed. Cool! We pressed to the Erenderia area. Bill was hurting and needed a margarita for sure.
Pup and I spent some extra time on some top secret single tracks and then took photos of the pelicans, man there were a lot of them on this trip.
Adam and Alice were waiting for us as were the cocktails and Big Daddy and some other party type people! It was pretty much on.

Some of us went into town for some pic Fillet Ranchero at the Cocina two blocks off the main road….yummmmy
We had intended to ride Erenderia – Santo Tomas – Urapan – Ojos and then the Copadre to the border the next day but when we arrived in Urapan we realized the fires had smoked out the valley and we weren’t sure if we would be riding into real fire danger.
Also it was well over 100 I’m sure in the back valleys and Bill was hurting but playing tough guy.
We explored some washes but pretty much washed out and went for tacos in Ensenada.
On the way home it was another stellar day and the only part of the trip that really sucked was the 1:10 minute wait at the TJ border but even that was fun!
